Are Payday Loans always Confidential?

A lot of people use payday loans and most of them are a little bit embarrassed about it. The ads that you see for payday loan companies all swear that the process is confidential. That raises the question as to whether or not they really are. So are payday loans always confidential or will people find out when you have taken one out?

The answer to whether or not payday loans are confidential is maybe, so you probably shouldn't count on it. The problem with the payday loan is that although they claim that it is confidential some of the things that they do during the application process make it seem unlikely that they are actually able to keep it confidential. If you really don't want somebody to know that you have taken a payday loan you are best not getting one since there is a chance that word will get out. No matter how discreet the payday loan company is.

The biggest problem with keeping your payday loan confidential is that in many cases they are going to verify your employment. If they are loaning you money until your next paycheck they naturally want to make sure that you are actually going to get another paycheck. They will call your employer to find out how long you have worked there and how much you make. They say they can do this discreetly so that nobody knows why they are calling. However it is hard to believe that many employers wouldn't be able to figure it out. If you don't want your boss to know that you have a payday loan you are going to have to avoid taking one.

The other issue that you may face is that many payday loan companies will also want you to list references on your application. In some cases they will also want to know who your landlord is so that they know where you live if you don't payback your loan. Again they are going to call them and as discreet as they think they are you have to assume that people are going to be able to figure out why they are calling.

One time when your payday loan will no longer be confidential is if you fail to pay it back. At that point it will almost certainly be referred to a collection agency. They will report the non payment to the credit bureaus. That means that it will appear on your credit report. Anytime that somebody checks your credit they will see that you took a payday loan and failed it to pay it back. Given that many employers check peoples credit before hiring them and landlords check it before renting an apartment there are going to be lots of people who you don't want to know about your payday loan who see it.
